Remember middle school, when “going out” with someone meant his dad would drive him to meet you—and your mom—at the movies?
Today I was thinking back to middle school, the time when girls discover that whole “boys have cooties” thing is a lie. My mind wandered through first crushes to first kisses to first dates.
After my run, I extended the love-on-the-brain theme into breakfast: with a Lavender love potion parfait. The cream is my Healthy Whipped Cream blended with blueberries; lavender refers only to the color, not the taste.
Soy Free Lavender Cream
(Makes 1 1/2 cups: one Katie-sized serving!)
- sweetener of choice
- 1/16th tsp salt
- handful blueberries
- scant 2 1/2 tbsp water (20g)
- 3 drops coconut extract, optional but recommended
- 1/2 serving agar base (recipe linked below)
Instructions: First, make up the agar base. When it’s cooled, put 1/2 of it in a blender (or Magic Bullet) with all the other ingredients and blend away. Whip very well. I like to put it in the freezer for a few minutes prior to eating, so it’s super-cold.
See original cream post for Nutrition Information.
For the parfait, I simply layered cooked oatmeal, cacao nibs, and the cream.
Question of the Day:
Do you remember your first kiss?
I am sorry to say, mine was not “Hollywood movie” romantic. Actually it was mortifying! I was in 7th grade, at a friend’s birthday party.
A bunch of us were sitting in her backyard, including my boyfriend at the time. Suddenly, everyone starts chanting, “Kiss kiss kiss!” Because so few of my friends were in relationships at such a young age, they decided that others’ relationships were their business; it was like Gossip Girl. Ugh. Anyway, the guy leans in, and I get all nervous. I scream, “Don’t kiss me, I have taco breath!” :-?Mortifying with a capital M. (But in the end, he kissed me anyway lol.)

That looks so PRETTY! All your food does of course, and your photography is AMAZING!
My first kiss was in kindergarten for a dare. So not the most romantic experience of my life! 😛
P.S. You HAVE to do a post for the chocolate raspberry fudge cake, so everyone can enjoy it’s complete AMAZINGNESS!! So SO good you Chocolate Covered Genius! (<—you should change your blog name to that! :P)
Love you, Emma. Really. I’m thinking of moving to the UK just so I can see you (and get away from this ugly weather here).
Naww I love you too Katie! Please move here!! We can run together and eat fudge babies as we go 🙂
OHMYGOSH KATIE!!!! I want that love potion right now!!! 🙂
This looks great! I have to remember to make more agar base! I always just forget but it’s actually so flipping easy…argh 😛
Anyway, I wanted to comment on your other post because I am one of the few people who actually think the chocolate cake in Matilda looks DELISH. It looks so rich and gooey and chocolatey. I’m like you in the sense that I want my chocolate to be rich and full flavored. So most chocolate cakes are a disappointment… but when they’re thick and gooey, I love ’em!
That’s why I love chocolate mousse pie… it’s kinda chocolate cake, while still being rich and luxurious :).
what a beautiful looking breakfast! omg. my first kiss was in 8th grade and it was outside of a movie theater. it was a nice kiss but my mother saw me from her car in the parking lot when she came to pick me up oops! she didn’t tell me until a year later and she said “how did you know how to do that?!” lol
oh no! i would’ve been mortified! but so funny!
my first kiss? Does a boy running up to you, kissing you on the cheek on the playground in the 6th grade and being so dumbfounded you dont have any idea what just happened..if that counts, yes, that was mine 🙂 I wasn’t even really aware it was even happening….lol
The pics are awesome on this post…love the flowers!
that was my first kiss too. dunno why they run away after… maybe they think we’re going to beat them up for kissing us? i thought it was yucky. but later on, i started to like the guy. he never kissed me again :(.
Sweetheart! How are you lovely? i just used your “Healthier choc cake” recipe to make a fun cake for my man! Come and take a look! I gave you a shout out….well to my 2 or 3 readers 🙁
I remember my first kiss! It was with my playmate in like 2nd grade! It was on the cheek, but it still counts. Silly, silly, silly! I remember all the things that I did as a kid that were so silly! Just because I had a crush on someone… 🙂
Also, that Love Potion looks like heaven! 😉
Mucho amor mi amiguita,
Aly
I’ve never tried yogurt or smoothie parfaits layered with cooked oatmeal! I use raw oats or buckwheat groats a lot, but never cooked. Thanks for reminding me to do so 🙂
Where do you get your parfait glass, by the way? I broke mine recently and haven’t been able to find a sub ANYWHERE!
Shhh don’t tell my mom, but I used one of her fine china glasses ;). (I’m just kidding about the “don’t tell her” part; she knows I used it.)
Hahaha taco breath? That’s hilarious!
My first kiss was freshman year of high school during the Lizzie McGuire movie. With a 7th grader. Yeah, I’m cool.
Gorgeous photos! Though you should try actual lavendar some time – I adore it (when used subtly!) in sweet things 🙂
First proper kiss? Rather unpleasantly slobbery… poor boy didn’t know what he was doing!
Do you grow your own? I don’t think I’ve ever seen lavender!
Well, my parents have it in the garden but I wouldn’t use that! Culinary lavender is available in culinary/gourmet stores 🙂
