Super Healthy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

The idea of avocado chocolate mousse has been popular on the health food scene for years, but some of the recipes out there are unfortunately so awful they only prove true mainstream society’s claim that avocado chocolate mousse is too weird or too healthy to really be dessert.

This is exactly what happened to me a few years back when one of my friends found a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse and decided we should try it. The results were so terrible that it took me five years to even think about coming up with my own version of the popular dessert.

(Note to self: Always be suspicious of a chocolate pudding recipe that does not call for any salt whatsoever.)

However, when the subject of avocado chocolate mousse came up on the blog a few weeks ago when I posted my 20 favorite Healthy Chocolate Recipes, I was finally inspired to give the idea a second chance.

And I’m so glad I did! With the right recipe, avocado chocolate mousse can be really good, for a healthy dessert or not!

Above – watch the video how to make avocado chocolate mousse!

The best part about this avocado chocolate mousse is that it tastes so decadent and so sinful that you completely forget you’re getting so many health benefits at the same time!

Avocados are 100% cholesterol-free, contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; and just one serving of the superfood offers eight percent of the daily value of fiber—a nutrient which provides a feeling of fullness and has also been found to potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

With less than one gram of sugar per ounce, avocados have the least amount of sugar per serving of any fruit, and they act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients.

Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse

When I was asked to help raise awareness and get the word out about National Diabetes Month—which takes place every November—I immediately wanted to help. My grandfather had diabetes for as long as I knew him, and I know many readers of this blog are also all too familiar with the disease.

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future.  The HAAS Avocado Board (HAB) has joined the American Diabetes Association in the national Stop Diabetes movement, with a campaign goal of helping to increase awareness about the role that good fats play in daily nutrition.

And I couldn’t think of a better time than Hug A Fat Month to post this particular recipe – because it is full of healthy fats!

The recipe is vegan, paleo, gluten free, and you can even use a sugar free sweetener if you want to make a low carb or keto avocado chocolate mousse.

The message I’m trying to convey with this post isn’t that eating avocado chocolate mousse will cure diabetes. (If only it were that simple.) But the American Diabetes Association wants people to choose a sensible diet that includes healthy fats—such as avocados—in moderation and in place of higher-cholesterol foods.

Eat delicious foods, enjoy what you are eating, and really be mindful by savoring food slowly so that you eat less and feel more satisfied.

Ingredients

  • flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
  • 1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
  • 3-4 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)

Instructions

  • **You have two options for this recipe: The version with the chocolate chips will be richer; the version with the dutch cocoa (important to use dutch) will be lower in fat and sugar.Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. (Watch the video above to see the recipe being made step-by-step.) I used 3 tbsp almond milk, but if you’re not using a liquid sweetener then you might want to add a little extra for a smoother consistency. so delicious! I didn’t have ripe avocados so I did 1 and 1/2 unripe avocados and an overripe banana and it worked so well!

Thank you so much for making it!

  2. Phoenix says:

Thumbs up from me and my fiance, both diabetic (I’m vegan and he’s not). Made using half regular cocoa, half melted sugar free keto chocolate chips, Now brand chocolate monkfruit drops, and cashew/almond milk. Thank you for the recipe Katie.

  3. Kathleen Murphy says:

This was delicious. I used the melted chocolate chips, and heavy cream. I started out with 2 tablespoons of confectioners Swerve but kinda had a bite to it so added a tablespoon of granulated xylitol and another tablespoon of heavy cream to mix in the xylitol (5 tablespoons of cream). Very rich and yummy. It was so easy to make definitely a keeper. I give it 5/5 stars

  4. Leida says:

Loved the chocolate mouse recipe. I only had one avocado so I basically 1/2 the recipe-except for the maple syrup and a bit more almond milk. Yes, we have a sweet tooth! Thank you!!

  5. Vanessa says:

I made this with maple syrup as a sweetener, the melted chocolate chips, and a half/half mix of cocoa and cacao powders. I could definitely still taste the avocado. I even added a little powdered sugar after mixing and tasting all the ingredients because the avocado flavor was so strong. It was ok but I wouldn’t make it again.

  6. Angela says:

Delicious! I substituted the chocolate chips for ‘Swiss Miss’ milk hot chocolate mix since that’s just what I had in my pantry, but it worked out well since I didn’t end up needing as much of the sweetener (agave maple syrup) since it gave it some more sweetness. I sprinkled coarsely chopped toasted Almonds when serving!

  7. Belinda Lee says:

so could I use cacao powder instead of cocoa powder (cacao is better supposedly with anti-oxidants)?
Also how many servings does this make as I’m only a one person household?
thanks guys, just found your site today

  8. Maya says:

I am on a vegan keto diet so I melted dark chocolate and mixed it in with the avocado mixture. I added 2 scoops chocolate protein powder and had to add a lot more almond milk. It’s silky and delicious! Thank you

  9. Diana Lemon says:

Hello and thank you for printing this recipe! However, I could not find a video to watch the prep part and its kind of vague as far as what to do. If you could kindly email me at moorelemon@gmail.com I would appreciate it!

  10. Isobel Stewart says:

hey, I don’t know what went so wrong for me but this turned out quite bitter and tasted very much of avocado and not much of chocolate. In the UK I think all cocoa powder is dutch processed so I didn’t have any ‘regular’ stuff but I assumed this wouldn’t be a problem. I used honey instead of maple syrup which would have also made a difference but even after adding quite a bit more honey it wasn’t great. Any suggestions?

    1. CCK Media Team says:

Substituting all dutch would unfortunately definitely alter the taste. The initial 1/4 cup does need to be regular cocoa.

About two years ago, a then-gf (almost Vegan) and I (now Vegan), decided to make a vegan recipe chocolate mousse. At that time, if memory serves me right, we used avocados and soft TOFU and it turned out DE-LI-CIOUS.
Flash-forward to two months ago. I wanted to make this recipe for my sister and her family but I couldn’t find it (then-gf has it…gosh!), so I found YOURS 🙂 🙂 🙂
I have to say that even without the tofu, the mousse still came out so creamy and tasty that my not-very-healthy-eating bro-in-law couldn’t say no to trying it.
I’m stoked to find you posting this and other dairy-free, yummi-licious foods.

    1. CCK Media Team says:

Haha well thank you so much for trying it!

  12. Margaret Leon says:

Just made the avocado mousse and love it, I used chestnut honey and some Xylitol for sweetener. Think next time I will use maple syrup. Love your black bean brownies as well!

  13. Kathryn Cronkrite says:

OMGdess. This was delicious. Thick, rich and creamy. Thank you, Katie.

  14. Stephanie says:

This recipe does not need 2 avocados. Would like to try this with one, unless you want to taste the avocado. Extra fat that is unnecessary if you ask me. I also needed a little more maple syrup and dash of cinnamon to cover that avocado taste. I needed more liquid also. It was good in the end.

  15. Erica says:

Delish! A great way to meet the sugar cravings without being too unhealthy!

“You really can’t taste the avocado!” This was not true for me. And I gotta say, I’m not a fan of the taste of avocado on its own. This is the 3rd avocado pudding type recipe I have tried to see if anyone can really tone out that avocado taste while keeping that creaminess. So, this is a very fluffy, creamy mousse. Flavor-wise, it needed a lot of help. I added extra maple syrup, then added greek yogurt, and finally added a scoop of birthday cake flavored protein powder. These additions lessened the taste of avocado, obvs the greek yogurt adds a tang that some people hate, but it also added more calories. I think I am done with avocado puddings. Thanks for trying!!

    1. Jrose says:

OMG I thought this recipe was great the way it was. I cat stand the taste of avocado and this recipe left me wondering if I forgot to put the avocado into it. This is a great way to get the healTh benefits of avocado without the taste.
