Super Healthy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

The idea of avocado chocolate mousse has been popular on the health food scene for years, but some of the recipes out there are unfortunately so awful they only prove true mainstream society’s claim that avocado chocolate mousse is too weird or too healthy to really be dessert.

This is exactly what happened to me a few years back when one of my friends found a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse and decided we should try it. The results were so terrible that it took me five years to even think about coming up with my own version of the popular dessert.

(Note to self: Always be suspicious of a chocolate pudding recipe that does not call for any salt whatsoever.)

However, when the subject of avocado chocolate mousse came up on the blog a few weeks ago when I posted my 20 favorite Healthy Chocolate Recipes, I was finally inspired to give the idea a second chance.

And I’m so glad I did! With the right recipe, avocado chocolate mousse can be really good, for a healthy dessert or not!

Above – watch the video how to make avocado chocolate mousse!

The best part about this avocado chocolate mousse is that it tastes so decadent and so sinful that you completely forget you’re getting so many health benefits at the same time!

Avocados are 100% cholesterol-free, contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; and just one serving of the superfood offers eight percent of the daily value of fiber—a nutrient which provides a feeling of fullness and has also been found to potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

With less than one gram of sugar per ounce, avocados have the least amount of sugar per serving of any fruit, and they act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients.

Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse

When I was asked to help raise awareness and get the word out about National Diabetes Month—which takes place every November—I immediately wanted to help. My grandfather had diabetes for as long as I knew him, and I know many readers of this blog are also all too familiar with the disease.

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future.  The HAAS Avocado Board (HAB) has joined the American Diabetes Association in the national Stop Diabetes movement, with a campaign goal of helping to increase awareness about the role that good fats play in daily nutrition.

And I couldn’t think of a better time than Hug A Fat Month to post this particular recipe – because it is full of healthy fats!

The recipe is vegan, paleo, gluten free, and you can even use a sugar free sweetener if you want to make a low carb or keto avocado chocolate mousse.

The message I’m trying to convey with this post isn’t that eating avocado chocolate mousse will cure diabetes. (If only it were that simple.) But the American Diabetes Association wants people to choose a sensible diet that includes healthy fats—such as avocados—in moderation and in place of higher-cholesterol foods.

Eat delicious foods, enjoy what you are eating, and really be mindful by savoring food slowly so that you eat less and feel more satisfied.

Ingredients

  • flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
  • 1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
  • 3-4 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)

Instructions

  • **You have two options for this recipe: The version with the chocolate chips will be richer; the version with the dutch cocoa (important to use dutch) will be lower in fat and sugar.Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. (Watch the video above to see the recipe being made step-by-step.) I used 3 tbsp almond milk, but if you’re not using a liquid sweetener then you might want to add a little extra for a smoother consistency. I loved the avocado chocolate pudding. What is the recipe for the chocolate drizzle shown on top? I ended up using mini chocolate chips instead. Thanks much ?

  2. Croline says:

Did this recipe today, easy and smooth! The avocado taste was a bit too present though (they were ripe, but maybe not enough?), so I turned the 4 portions I got into “mug cakes”: cooked in the microwave ( I cooked the cups separatly for 2 min each, on 800w)

    1. sylvie Andrews says:

Question…..ingredients list chocolate powder twice. Do we need 1/2 cup of just 1/4 cup of one or the other?

  3. Jo says:

I made this the other day – amazing!!! – have made it again already it was so nice 🙂 (I made the cocoa version) – Thanks 🙂

  4. Sara says:

Hi there! Thank you so much for the recipe! How I made mine:
    – 2 Large Has Avocados
    -3 Tbsp Organic Cocoa Powder
-1/4 C Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
    – Pinch of Himalayan Salt
    – 4 Tbsp Agave Nectar (Initially only put 2 Tbs, then saw it needed more so added 2 more.

Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.

(My family had no idea there were avocados in it!) Served it over a dallop of cool whip and topped it off with chopped strawberries and grated 88% dark chocolate.

    Happy holidays!

Thank you again. Really appreciate it!

Can I use coconut sugar instead? and cacao nibs instead of powder ?

  6. Ivy says:

Thanks for the recipe! I made this and it was so tasty. I did a half and half of the cocoa powder and melted dark chocolate chips. It really does taste decadent and not like avocados! Thanks for posting!

  7. Kirstie Smith says:

This recipe is delicious, easy, momma and kid approved!

  8. Sweet tooth says:

I made this last night when I was having a huge urge for something sweet. I used maple syrup instead of Stevia……it was absolutely delicious…my first time making avocado mousse and I was so surprised! Would definitely recommend ?

  9. Suzie says:

Yikes, that’s a lot of sweetner for 2 avocados! 2-6 tbsp is not healthy at all.

  10. Eileen says:

Tried the recipe but since my avocados were larger, had to adjust the recipe for chocolate chips, honey and salt. Used about double but only ~ 1/4 c milk. Great consistency but the taste is a bit light and buttery with the avocado. My husband tasted the avocado right away :(. I am using this to frost his birthday cake – diabetic so better frosting than normal buttercream. Going to do 4 thin layers, 2 with raspberry, one with the mousse nd then frost the outside. Will chill before serving but think with all ingredients, will make a great cake with less sugar and the junk that normally is found in a cake.

  11. Sherry says:

I have to admit it. I was very skeptical of a pudding where you “couldn’t taste the avocado.”
However, upon making this and after reading the comments and adding a bit more sweetener, it tasted INCREDIBLE!!
Thanks for another wonderful recipe. I used almond milk as I am lactose intolerant and it worked beautifully in this recipe. I used my Blendtec twister jar and it blended it perfectly!

    1. Jason Sanford says:

Thanks for including the picture. It looks great!

  12. The Mad Mother says:

    Hi!
Can I use unsweetened baking chocolate in place of the chips and cocoa?
And would banana work as a sweetener?
Our baby has a lot of intolerances and we’ve had a lot of success with food trials but I don’t know what he’ll be able to have for added sugars by the time he turns one in August so I’m searching for an alternative to cake for him!
    Thanks in advance!

  13. Salina says:

This recipie is awesome! I made it with 70% dark chocolate and used some honey and my 2 and 4yr old loves it!! I actually tricked them into eating avocados…Yay! 😉
    Thanks!

  14. Hayley says:

Easy to make and tasty with lovely creamy texture. Next time I will add more stevia and maybe more chocolate as I’m a sweet tooth and wasnt quite sweet enough for me.

  15. Johno says:

Made this tonight using cocoa powder , everyone loved it , added orange essence , a little honey , served withe blueberries and strawberries, it was awesome

  16. Suzette says:

So, I made this recipe with dark cacao. It as terrible until I made adjustments. I added a tablespoon of agave and it was perfect. I topped it off with chocolate chips and whipped vegan cream. But without the agave, this recipe didn’t work. Otherwise, it was awesome.
