Super Healthy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

The idea of avocado chocolate mousse has been popular on the health food scene for years, but some of the recipes out there are unfortunately so awful they only prove true mainstream society’s claim that avocado chocolate mousse is too weird or too healthy to really be dessert.

This is exactly what happened to me a few years back when one of my friends found a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse and decided we should try it. The results were so terrible that it took me five years to even think about coming up with my own version of the popular dessert.

(Note to self: Always be suspicious of a chocolate pudding recipe that does not call for any salt whatsoever.)

However, when the subject of avocado chocolate mousse came up on the blog a few weeks ago when I posted my 20 favorite Healthy Chocolate Recipes, I was finally inspired to give the idea a second chance.

And I’m so glad I did! With the right recipe, avocado chocolate mousse can be really good, for a healthy dessert or not!

Above – watch the video how to make avocado chocolate mousse!

The best part about this avocado chocolate mousse is that it tastes so decadent and so sinful that you completely forget you’re getting so many health benefits at the same time!

Avocados are 100% cholesterol-free, contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; and just one serving of the superfood offers eight percent of the daily value of fiber—a nutrient which provides a feeling of fullness and has also been found to potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

With less than one gram of sugar per ounce, avocados have the least amount of sugar per serving of any fruit, and they act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients.

Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse

When I was asked to help raise awareness and get the word out about National Diabetes Month—which takes place every November—I immediately wanted to help. My grandfather had diabetes for as long as I knew him, and I know many readers of this blog are also all too familiar with the disease.

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future.  The HAAS Avocado Board (HAB) has joined the American Diabetes Association in the national Stop Diabetes movement, with a campaign goal of helping to increase awareness about the role that good fats play in daily nutrition.

And I couldn’t think of a better time than Hug A Fat Month to post this particular recipe – because it is full of healthy fats!

The recipe is vegan, paleo, gluten free, and you can even use a sugar free sweetener if you want to make a low carb or keto avocado chocolate mousse.

The message I’m trying to convey with this post isn’t that eating avocado chocolate mousse will cure diabetes. (If only it were that simple.) But the American Diabetes Association wants people to choose a sensible diet that includes healthy fats—such as avocados—in moderation and in place of higher-cholesterol foods.

Eat delicious foods, enjoy what you are eating, and really be mindful by savoring food slowly so that you eat less and feel more satisfied.

Ingredients

  • flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
  • 1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
  • 3-4 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)

Instructions

  • **You have two options for this recipe: The version with the chocolate chips will be richer; the version with the dutch cocoa (important to use dutch) will be lower in fat and sugar.Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. (Watch the video above to see the recipe being made step-by-step.) I used 3 tbsp almond milk, but if you’re not using a liquid sweetener then you might want to add a little extra for a smoother consistency. Hey there. Going away on a girls weekend and wanted to bring this as a dessert. Do you think if I made it the day before, it would keep well? Not sure if any of the ingredients would stop the avocado from turning brown or changing the flavour?
    Thanks for your advice

    1. Jason Sanford says:

It might change color. Taste should be fine though.

  2. Emma says:

Thanks for the recipe, it was delicious. Even my incredibly fussy little boys loved it!

  3. Annmarie says:

Hi. I made this & it’s delicious! I used cocoa powder, maple syrup & coconut milk. Next time, I’m going to try it with raw honey & see how that turns out. Not a fan of stevia. Couldn’t even detect the avocado! Thanks for this healthy recipe, Katie!

  4. Taylor says:

Sooo good! I just did a sprinkle of stevia and about 2 T of honey. Perfect! Then I topped it with unsweetened shredded coconut. Thanks so much for posting!

  5. Sonia says:

    CAN YOU FREEZE IT?
Katie – or anyone- do you know if this freezes OK? Any issues?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Sorry, have never tried, but definitely feel free to experiment!

  6. Sarah Brenner says:

About an hour ago I noticed I had an avocado that wouldn’t make it through the day tomorrow. So I found this and immediately made it. Completely skeptical bc of the millions of others out there, I only made a half batch, thinking I would throw it away. I used the melted chocolate method (Lily’s chocolate chips to cut back even more on the sugar). I can’t have sugar. I don’t even eat carrots in hopes to avoid it. So, it was finished blending and I very cautiously dipped my pinky in the bowl. As soon as it hit my mouth, in a completely empty house, I yelled “you shut the f- up!!” And ate the entire thing! (Sorry not sorry). Thank you. It’s been a year of no desserts or trying ones that I can’t stand. I am over the moon!

    1. Jennifer says:

I’m curious how you made this without sugar since the recipe calls for it. Did the chocolate chips have sugar? Or did they have a sugar substitute?

  7. Elsa says:

Delicious! I loved it. I could taste the avocado but I didn’t mind as it was super creamy. Thanks, I love your recipes!

  8. Hayley says:

Pretty good! This is my first time making an avocado-based dessert. I used cocoa powder and whole milk and initially was like oh no, it really just tastes like chocolatey avocado. However, I forgot the vanilla extract! The vanilla extract and a bit more sweetener really fixed it up. Good stuff! 🙂

  9. Kim Phillips says:

Made the cocoa version with half-and-half and stevia. It tastes strongly like avocado, but maybe if a person can’t eat sweets, it will be satisfying on some level.

  10. Morgan says:

This mousse saved my night! I have been cooking for about six hours trying to make fun vegan things to bring to a New Year’s Eve party. I had a crazy idea to make chocolate cups full of mousse but all of the aquafaba recipes weren’t working. So I went to the store at 11:00pm to find something else to make and saw the avocados! This recipe was quick, easy and insanely delicious! I had my non-vegan family try it and they loved it! Also, it looks super cute piped into vegan white chocolate cups! Thank you so much!!

  11. Bethany says:

Loved this. We’ll be making it again in a larger quantity.
I used the chocolate (43% cocoa – i’ll aim for something a bit blacker next time, but that’s what i had), because i was afraid it wouldn’t be as silky with cocoa, and i added just a dash of maple syrup, skimped a little on the salt, and doubled the vanilla. I didn’t weigh the avocado, so not sure if i had the right amount.
The texture was absolutely gorgeous. As to flavour, i’d have been happy to have it a little less sweet, but it was still good. I could *just* taste the avocado, but i made sure Mum didn’t see me making it, and she didn’t guess, even when i brought out the remains of the avocado for the cat to eat!
I kept a little bit aside to see how it would store, and after a couple of hours in the fridge, the texture is just the same ( i thought it would stiffen), but it’s tasting a lot more like avocado – or rather, like something green but non-specific. I’m thinking a dash of Sable (chocolate port from Kellermeister in South Australia) or Baileys would probably fix that – or i might even try replacing the milk with strained orange juice….

  12. Lisa says:

Hey! This recipe only makes 2 servings, not 4! 🙂 LOL. Delicious!

  13. Sheetal Shah says:

What size avacados do you use?

  14. Barbra says:

OMG this is delicious! I used unsweetened cocoa powder with coconut milk and Xlya for sugar. So so yummy!

  15. Anita @ feed me sushi says:

Hi Katie! This recipe was great! I made it for my boyfriend and I when we had some avocados that were getting a bit ripe. When I first said “avocado mousse” you should have seen the confused look on his face! Well he was even more confused when he took a bite because he LOVED it. He pretty much ate the whole thing and couldn’t believe there was avocado in there. It’s magic!

  16. Kaity says:

Hi, new to your recipes, but they come up frequently in my healthy dessert research 🙂

Tried this avocado pudding recipe. It was great! I used the cocoa powder and Stevia. Additionally I broke some chocolate into small pieces and some tea biscuit cookies into the pudding. I didn’t have any milk products around besides some half and half, but it was amazing with that.

Thanks for the great recipe! Will definitely try some others, and possibly purchase your cookbook!
