Super Healthy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

The idea of avocado chocolate mousse has been popular on the health food scene for years, but some of the recipes out there are unfortunately so awful they only prove true mainstream society’s claim that avocado chocolate mousse is too weird or too healthy to really be dessert.

This is exactly what happened to me a few years back when one of my friends found a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse and decided we should try it. The results were so terrible that it took me five years to even think about coming up with my own version of the popular dessert.

(Note to self: Always be suspicious of a chocolate pudding recipe that does not call for any salt whatsoever.)

However, when the subject of avocado chocolate mousse came up on the blog a few weeks ago when I posted my 20 favorite Healthy Chocolate Recipes, I was finally inspired to give the idea a second chance.

And I’m so glad I did! With the right recipe, avocado chocolate mousse can be really good, for a healthy dessert or not!

Above – watch the video how to make avocado chocolate mousse!

The best part about this avocado chocolate mousse is that it tastes so decadent and so sinful that you completely forget you’re getting so many health benefits at the same time!

Avocados are 100% cholesterol-free, contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; and just one serving of the superfood offers eight percent of the daily value of fiber—a nutrient which provides a feeling of fullness and has also been found to potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

With less than one gram of sugar per ounce, avocados have the least amount of sugar per serving of any fruit, and they act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients.

Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse

When I was asked to help raise awareness and get the word out about National Diabetes Month—which takes place every November—I immediately wanted to help. My grandfather had diabetes for as long as I knew him, and I know many readers of this blog are also all too familiar with the disease.

Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future.  The HAAS Avocado Board (HAB) has joined the American Diabetes Association in the national Stop Diabetes movement, with a campaign goal of helping to increase awareness about the role that good fats play in daily nutrition.

And I couldn’t think of a better time than Hug A Fat Month to post this particular recipe – because it is full of healthy fats!

The recipe is vegan, paleo, gluten free, and you can even use a sugar free sweetener if you want to make a low carb or keto avocado chocolate mousse.

The message I’m trying to convey with this post isn’t that eating avocado chocolate mousse will cure diabetes. (If only it were that simple.) But the American Diabetes Association wants people to choose a sensible diet that includes healthy fats—such as avocados—in moderation and in place of higher-cholesterol foods.

Eat delicious foods, enjoy what you are eating, and really be mindful by savoring food slowly so that you eat less and feel more satisfied.

Ingredients

  • flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
  • 1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
  • 3-4 tbsp milk of choice
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)

Instructions

  • **You have two options for this recipe: The version with the chocolate chips will be richer; the version with the dutch cocoa (important to use dutch) will be lower in fat and sugar.Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. (Watch the video above to see the recipe being made step-by-step.) I used 3 tbsp almond milk, but if you’re not using a liquid sweetener then you might want to add a little extra for a smoother consistency. This is crazy delicious! I used the cocoa powder and agave. A 1/2 cup of powder is way too rich- either add a 3rd avocado and more milk or reduce cocoa to 1/4 or 1/3 cup.
Now instead of panicking when all my avocados ripen at the same time, I’m going to do a happy little dance because I have a great excuse to make a healthy dessert!

  2. Doreen says:

I used raw chocolate instead of coca and there was no bitterness. Just used a pinch of stevia and topped with coconut cream.

  3. SugarMama says:

Just made this – it was really good, but I had to put way more sugar (in my case, raw honey, but still “sugar”) in than I would have liked just to make it palatable. I’m going to try to make this again adding in a banana for natural sweetness and also cutting the cocoa powder in half…1/2 a cup makes it nice and chocolatey but so unbelievably bitter. I find Stevia seems to have a bitter aftertaste and I don’t really like it either. Any other suggestions for maintaining chocolate flavour and keeping it still sweet enough to taste like a “treat”? I absolutely LOVE your recipes – I’m a sugar addict trying to break the habit and I find that your recipes satisfy my sugar cravings in a much healthier way than grabbing a Snickers bar, so thank you!

  4. Lauren says:

I just made this and doubled the recipe. It is amazing! My children cannot tell the difference between this and regular chocolate pudding! It is absolutely delicious, silky, satisfying, and guilt free (if you don’t eat the whole bowl)!!! Thank you!

  5. maya says:

I make a similar version but I add a little cinnamon powder and never use milk. The mousse is not too thick, just perfect :))

  6. Stephanie says:

Sooooo good! Even my oldest daughter (4), who swears she doesn’t like avocado, totally devoured this mousse. My youngest (14 months) did too! Oh my god it’s so delish! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  7. Adala says:

I’ve been craving a chocolate dessert that was ketogenic friendly. This recipe really hit the spot and my husband loved it too! I used my vitamix to get the smooth pudding texture. My sweetener of choice is swerve and I only used 2 Tbs. I used unsweetened almond milk and we only had 1 avocado on hand that was ripe. It’s worth mentioning that a room temperature avocado blends much smoother. This made 2 perfect dessert bowl sized servings. Thank you!!!! This is a new favorite recipe!

  8. Tabitha says:

Delicious! I made the cocoa powder version with maple syrup. It was VERY rich but I could barely detect avocado. All 4 of my kids loved it and I didn’t tell them the ingredients

  9. mimi says:

Can this be made a couple of days in advance?

    1. Jason Sanford says:

Yes I think that would be fine.

  10. Judy says:

Because avos don’t last long after cutting, must this recipe be eaten right away? Will it last in the fridge & for how long? Thanks!

    1. Erin Heintz says:

I made mine this past Friday, its Sunday and I am still eating it. It holds well!

  11. Daniel Springer says:

Oh my belly. I have no regrets not sharing. Oh… OK maybe a little.. it’s been a tough week. I… burp.. oh.. delicious.. I can’t believe I ate the whole bowl..

  12. Erin Heintz says:

I just made this with regular cocoa powder (not dark). I liked mine a little creamier so I added more almond milk. When it was done, I topped it with Cool Whip and it was AMAZING! Thank God for this recipe because it is a GREAT alternative to the cupcakes and donuts I was eating when I got my sweet tooth!

  13. Gretchen Perry-Emery says:

I added banana and sunbutter. It was excellent!

  14. Bethany says:

Unlike most of the people who’ve posted a comment on this, i have actually tried it – twice 🙂 It’s gorgeous. The first time i made it for Mum, i kept her away from the kitchen so she couldn’t see what went into it, and she had no idea it included avocado. I am in the process of moving from loathing all avocado to quite liking Reed avos (in things, not on their own) and not minding Shepards if properly disguised; i love this mousse. Plus, i can feel relatively virtuous while eating it. But we did notice last time that the leftovers tasted discernably avocado-flavoured next day.
I made the first batch with Cadbury “dark” melts (43% cocoa, so not what i’d call dark, but) and the latest one with half melts and half really good cocoa. Both were equally good.
To those who are finding this recipe bitter, i’d suggest that it’s worth changing your cocoa – some are far more bitter, and the less bitter ones are often darker and much more chocolatey, so you don’t need to use as much. I used Aldi’s “Choceur” brand.

  15. Sarah says:

I made this and it turned out so good! I used the cocoa powder version, and used about 6TBSP of erythritol for sweetener. Still a slight avocado aftertaste but I love avocado so it’s not a problem. The initial bite looks, feels, and tastes just like store bought pudding.

  16. Siebert200 says:

I added a 1/2 of banana to mine and blended it together and now I love it. Before it was not sweet enough for my liking. I used honey.
