If you’ve never tried avocado chocolate mousse before, this healthy recipe will take you completely by surprise!
It is rich and silky smooth… and you really can’t taste the avocado.

Super Healthy Chocolate Avocado Mousse
The idea of avocado chocolate mousse has been popular on the health food scene for years, but some of the recipes out there are unfortunately so awful they only prove true mainstream society’s claim that avocado chocolate mousse is too weird or too healthy to really be dessert.
This is exactly what happened to me a few years back when one of my friends found a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse and decided we should try it. The results were so terrible that it took me five years to even think about coming up with my own version of the popular dessert.
(Note to self: Always be suspicious of a chocolate pudding recipe that does not call for any salt whatsoever.)
However, when the subject of avocado chocolate mousse came up on the blog a few weeks ago when I posted my 20 favorite Healthy Chocolate Recipes, I was finally inspired to give the idea a second chance.
And I’m so glad I did! With the right recipe, avocado chocolate mousse can be really good, for a healthy dessert or not!
Above – watch the video how to make avocado chocolate mousse!
The best part about this avocado chocolate mousse is that it tastes so decadent and so sinful that you completely forget you’re getting so many health benefits at the same time!
Avocados are 100% cholesterol-free, contribute nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients; and just one serving of the superfood offers eight percent of the daily value of fiber—a nutrient which provides a feeling of fullness and has also been found to potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
With less than one gram of sugar per ounce, avocados have the least amount of sugar per serving of any fruit, and they act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients.

Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse
When I was asked to help raise awareness and get the word out about National Diabetes Month—which takes place every November—I immediately wanted to help. My grandfather had diabetes for as long as I knew him, and I know many readers of this blog are also all too familiar with the disease.
Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future. The HAAS Avocado Board (HAB) has joined the American Diabetes Association in the national Stop Diabetes movement, with a campaign goal of helping to increase awareness about the role that good fats play in daily nutrition.
And I couldn’t think of a better time than Hug A Fat Month to post this particular recipe – because it is full of healthy fats!
The recipe is vegan, paleo, gluten free, and you can even use a sugar free sweetener if you want to make a low carb or keto avocado chocolate mousse.
The message I’m trying to convey with this post isn’t that eating avocado chocolate mousse will cure diabetes. (If only it were that simple.) But the American Diabetes Association wants people to choose a sensible diet that includes healthy fats—such as avocados—in moderation and in place of higher-cholesterol foods.
Eat delicious foods, enjoy what you are eating, and really be mindful by savoring food slowly so that you eat less and feel more satisfied.

Avocado Chocolate Mousse
Ingredients
- flesh of 2 ripe avocados (240g)
- 1/4 cup regular cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup dutch cocoa OR melted chocolate chips
- 3-4 tbsp milk of choice
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp salt
- sweetener of choice to taste (I like 1/4 cup pure maple syrup)
Instructions
- **You have two options for this recipe: The version with the chocolate chips will be richer; the version with the dutch cocoa (important to use dutch) will be lower in fat and sugar.Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. (Watch the video above to see the recipe being made step-by-step.) I used 3 tbsp almond milk, but if you’re not using a liquid sweetener then you might want to add a little extra for a smoother consistency. **Also, sorry to have left you hanging on my previous post! I’m so thrilled to know people are actually reading the commentary of my posts. In terms of the story’s “ending,” I don’t really believe in happy endings for people in their twenties. Your story shouldn’t be over yet.
Although I’m no longer dating the guy from the story, he is still one of my favorite people in the world. I believe some people are just meant to be in your life. And I’m really glad he is in mine!

Just made this using cocoa powder and maple syrup as the sweetener. This recipe is genius. Great taste with a serving of vegetable. Love it. The only problem is that I’ve never bought avocados so I had no idea that you have to wait forever before they become ripe.
Thanks again. This is just perfect.
Hi thanks so much, I just made this its lovely, I put some orange zest on the top.
I’m always trying to find a healthy pudding treat substitutes this really ticks everything and more.
Junk food is so addictive, every week I have a “junk food day” however, with this recipe I don’t really need to
have cake, thanks!
I whipped this up last night and it was delicious! I made a quarter recipe as I was only cooking for me 🙂 I used half an avocado, 1/8 cup cocoa powder, 1 tbsp maple syrup, a pinch of salt, and a tbsp of almond milk. It was so rich and smooth!
Hi, I’m wondering how much Stevia ishould use if I sub the cocoa powder for carob powder and don’t use chocolate chips? What is the equivalent to sugar I should use?
We have never tried it with carob, so you will have to experiment, but it sounds like a fun experiment. Be sure to report back if you try!
Can I make this avocado chocolate mouse the night before?
Sure!
I make this recipe all the time! I haven’t tried any other versions, but certainly agree that any recipe that doesn’t have salt with the chocolate, I would be skeptical also. It is especially handy to make this when I’ve bought too many avocados or just don’t eat them fast enough. I especially love making this when it’s that time of the month….it really keeps me from overeating because of the healthy fat,and I still get the chocolatey goodness I’m usually craving (I’ve only made it with the chocolate chips so far).
Love your recipes, Katie! Thank you! ❤️
I followed the recipe exactly with cocoa power, 1% milk, and 2 tbsp of Stevia brown sugar and it was probably the best chocolate pudding I’ve ever had!! 😀
I’m thinking about using hot chocolate mix I bought when I was in Spain to replace cocoa powder, salt, and sweetener as well as substitute 1% milk with some almond milk to see how it turns out.
That sounds so amazing!
I made this using cocoa powder and thought it looked and tasted great My kids hated it. I think they suck.
?
I made this while my kids were playing upstairs and then called them down with the promise of chocolate mousse. They both took a big, excited bite, then made a face. My eight-year-old levelled a malevolent death glare at me and seethed, “There’s avocado in this!” LOL, your hidden avocado in this recipe is not so hidden. I have to agree with her. The taste was fairly prominent.
I just started Keto this week and I decided to make this to help me reach my daily fat intake in a healthier way. I made it with Hershey’s Dark Chocolate cocoa and it is delicious. I tried a spoonful of it before I put it in the fridge. I love Mexican chocolate flavors so I plan to sprinkle the top with cayenne and cinnamon and a dollop of whipped cream for dessert tonight.
I really appreciate how simple this recipe was in comparison to several others I researched. The results taste wonderful and feel indulgent. I have 170 pounds to lose and am incredibly grateful for resources like you as I continue this journey. I tried the non-diet, eat in moderation, anything goes approach this past fall and ended up with a net gain/loss of zero after the holidays.
I hope Keto works for me. I have noticed a decrease in my hunger today. I hope this is a good sign! Thank you for the work you do and the great recipes!
Good luck! I know the keto diet has been helpful to so many people who haven’t found success with other diets before trying it. -Jason
Yummy! Thank you for posting this super easy, delish recipe.
Just finished making this, and I can’t believe how chocolatey, rich, and not-avocado tasting it was! I did add about a tablespoon more of swerve because my husband thought just the 6 tbsps was too bitter from the cocoa. But I wouldnt reduce the cocoa! It turned out really well though; a bit on the cooling side because of the swerve, but the depth of flavour is unparallel, you really feel like its a regular dessert.
Thank you so much for this amazing recipe!
Just made this for the first time. Absolutely lovely. Even my veggie and avocado hating husband loved it. Can’t be bad.
I made this for the first time today, following the recipe to the letter and using cocoa powder. It turned out SUPER bitter with just “a pinch of stevia” for sweetening. I ended up adding teaspoons one at a time (around 8 I think) and a bit of cream to make it even close to edible. Maybe there is something missing in the ingredients? It was very smooth and delicious at the end but needed WAY more stevia to get there.
Hi, it sounds like you used regular stevia as opposed to pure stevia, where the only ingredient is stevia extract? The pure stuff is much more concentrated, and 1/8tsp equals 1/4 cup of sugar!
Thank you for this recipe and all your other recipes. I liked this mousse but I want to report that the avocado taste is still present. For those of us who substitute avocado or nuts for less healthy fats often, you’ll love this recipe. If, like me, you are trying to get your finicky boyfriend to accept this as regular chocolate mousse, you may be out of luck.
I was.
Oh well, more for me!
I made half the recipe because I only had one avocado. Did not have vanilla. I Substituted the milk for thickened coconut cream and maybe a couple tablespoons of soymilk, just so it would be thick. I used 2 T agave nectar and a pinch of stevia. It had a strong chocolate flavor and really took care of my sweet tooth! This recipe is very versatile! Thank you.
I wanted it extra thick!
