Avocado Frozen Yogurt: https://lett-trim.today/2013/05/20/avocado-frozen-yogurt/

The fourth week of May is known as National Frozen Yogurt Week, so I thought I’d play along this time: every single recipe on my blog this week will center around the frozen-yogurt theme, starting with today’s slightly-unconventional recipe for Avocado Frozen Yogurt.

The avocado makes this frozen dessert extra creamy and super healthy. Yes, it sounds strange, but this avocado dessert might just convert even the biggest avocado hater. And hey, at least it’s not Spinach Ice Cream!

Avocado Frozen Yogurt

Adapted from Homemade Frozen Yogurt

  • 1 large, ripe avocado (it should be soft)
  • 2 cups plain yogurt of choice (such as Wholesoy) (440g)
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (120g)
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (2g)
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • pinch pure stevia extract, or 3-4 tbsp sugar of choice (Amount will depend on the sweetness of your yogurt, and you may need more if you’re using an unsweetened yogurt. You want the non-frozen mixture to taste a little too sweet for your liking, as it is less sweet once frozen.)

Avocado frozen yogurt recipe: Scrape out the flesh of the avocado and discard the peel and pit. Blend all ingredients until completely smooth, in a blender, food processor, or Vita-Mix. If you have an ice cream maker, transfer mixture to the machine and churn according to manufacturer’s directions. My Cuisinart took just 10 minutes. Eat immediately as soft-serve, or freeze in an airtight container for a half hour if you want a firmer texture. (If you don’t have an ice cream machine, you can simply transfer the blended mixture to an airtight container, freeze, and stir every  half hour for 2-3 hours. The texture won’t be quite as creamy, but it still works.)

Feel free to leave as many flavor suggestions as you can dream up. There are four large containers of yogurt in my refrigerator, just waiting to be turned into frozen yogurt. Link of the Day:

I don’t know if they make a frozen yogurt version but I absolutely LOVE coconut gelato…YUM!

  2. Lydia says:

Pistachio frozen yogurt! I was just talking about it, then I checked your website and saw that you were asking for frozen yogurt ideas. It’s like it was meant to be 🙂

    Have a nice day!

I Second! This avacado yogurt looks like pistachio. I wonder if it just needs the nuts? What makes pistachio ice cream taste right?

      1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

I actually do have a recipe for pistachio ice cream, but it’s going in the cookbook so I’m not allowed to post it :(.

  3. Katy @ Katy's Kitchen says:

I love avocado frozen yogurt! It gives such a creamy flavour with so many good fats. Yours is such a beautiful colour!

  4. Kim says:

does it taste like avocado? I love avocados but I can’t imagine an ice cream?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Not really… I normally do not like avocado, but I liked this.

  5. Alexis says:

do you think you could just mix frozen avocado slices with frozen banana slices to make a soft serve ice cream without adding any extra sweetners–do you think that’d be good?

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

You never know unless you try!

      1. Grace says:

Ooh! If you try it, please report back! 🙂

Can’t make this yet because my avocados haven’t ripened yet. Grr. 🙁

I’ve never tried avocado in dessert, but I love banana soft serve… So this will most likely be uber yummy because creamy+more creamy= heaven in creamy form 🙂
        -Grace 🙂

    2. Liz says:

I’ve made delicious ice cream using only frozen banana before. Just make sure you chop it into small pieces before freezing. It makes it easier on your blender.

  6. Sarah the Official CCK drooler says:

Curious…did you try this on a big avocado hater? I’m one (I threw up an avocado chocolate mousse last time…no fun). I really love froyo though!
And if not, can you? I’m really cautious now, since that last episode. Thanks 🙂

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

Why yes, I did… me! I hate guacamole and don’t like avocado mousse either (at least not the recipe I tried), but I liked this.
But if you threw up with mousse, I’d maybe not try this recipe. Perhaps you are allergic… or an even bigger avocado hater than me!

  7. Sarah the Official CCK drooler says:

Oh, oatmeal raisin froyo please! or Neapolitan? or butterscotch?
And I rocky road would be amazing, man.
Caramel? Reeses? Key lime? Vanilla Strawberry? Mocha?
    And pina colada (virgin, pleaseandthankyou)!
Ok one last one…green tea froyo. Weird, I know. But I LOVE that stuff, so maybe you can try?
And tea reminds me that Chai would be amazing too!
    I’m done now. Pinky Promise.

  8. Norma Flora says:

Grapefruit!! Most definitely. Sounds gross, but is wonderful.

Hmmmm… I’ve never heard of avocado frozen yogurt (or ice cream!) before. Interesting idea!
I would love it if you made a chocolate or brownie batter frozen yogurt, a chocolate peanut butter cup yogurt, or strawberry or apple pie frozen yogurt. I would also LOVE vegan chocolate monster frozen yogurt (“Chocolate Monster” is chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips and chunks of peanut butter and was my favorite ice cream when I used to eat ice cream!)
Thanks for all of your great recipes!

  10. Beth says:

What happens if I try it without the milk? We are on the GAPS diet and can have yogurt, but aren’t having milk yet.

    1. Kim says:

I subbed in coconut milk and it worked wonderfully. Can you have that? Or almond milk?

      1. Anonymous says:

perfect…we can have almonds at this point. I will try to make some almond milk, thanks, I wouldn’t have thought of that!

    2. Kim says:

Even cashew milk would likely work wonderfully. All you have to do is soak a cup of raw cashews overnight, drain the water, run them through a blender with fresh water to the top, and voila, homemade cashew milk.
