Secretly Healthy Avocado Chocolate Pie

Secretly healthy avocado desserts

I know what you might be thinking.

There goes another millennial with her eye rolling basic avocado obsession, ruining dessert by putting avocado in everything.

But the concept of sweet avocado desserts is actually not a millennial invention at all.

Populations around the world have been using the superfood fruit to make Avocado Smoothies, milkshakes, pudding, fruit salad, and Avocado Ice Cream for years.

High in healthy fats (over 75% of the fat in avocado is the heart healthy unsaturated kind) and with a mild flavor, the creamy fruit is the perfect base for chocolate recipes like this rich chocolate avocado pie.

Also, just be glad I didn’t make a recipe for avocado toast chocolate bars.

Yes, such a thing is a real product you can buy at the store.

And yes, it has actual pieces of avocado toast smashed into the chocolate bar.

I can’t even.

(Although, to be fair, I am intrigued.)

Avocado Chocolate

How does it taste?

The first thing you all probably want to know is Does this pie taste like avocado?

Thankfully, the answer is No.

Guacamole is great and all, but I don’t want guacamole in my dessert.

If you are skeptical because you’ve tried desserts in the past that combined chocolate and avocado and did have an unfortunate taste?

Trust me, I’ve been there too.

In this deliciously healthy dessert recipe, I use two different types of chocolate, giving the pie a chocolatey brownie flavor and completely masking the avocado.

This means you can enjoy all the health benefits and the silky smooth texture without ever being able to tell the secret ingredient is there.

Vegan Chocolate Avocado Pie

Ingredients for the recipe

Avocado – Mashed avocado makes up the base of this pie and stands in for the heavy cream or egg yolks in most traditional chocolate pie recipes.

For the best flavor and texture, be sure to start with ripe avocado.

Cocoa Powder – I highly recommend using Dutch process cocoa powder, which should be readily available in most grocery stores.

If you cannot find this ingredient, you can swap it out for regular unsweetened cocoa powder or even hot chocolate mix.

Chocolate Chips – Melted chocolate chips add richness and a smooth texture. You can use milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate.

If you do not have chocolate chips on hand, you can substitute ten ounces of your favorite chocolate bars.

For a vegan chocolate avocado pie, go with plant based and dairy free chocolate chips. Or for a low carb and keto dessert, use sugar free chocolate chips.

Sweetener – My favorite option is pure maple syrup. Honey, agave, regular white sugar, or unrefined coconut sugar are fine as well.

To make the dessert without sugar, try xylitol or erythritol.

Salt – Throw in a pinch of salt (just a fourth teaspoon for the entire recipe) to balance the sweetness and add depth of flavor.

Vanilla – This ingredient is optional. I like the hint of vanilla it imparts on each bite.

Avocado chocolate pie crust

Feel free to use your favorite store bought or homemade crust for this chocolate pie.

Or keep it crustless, serving the chocolate filling in ramekins as chocolate mousse.

Here is the no bake pie crust recipe I used:

1 1/2 cups raw or roasted nuts of choice, 1 cup dates or another dried fruit, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons Dutch cocoa powder or 3 tablespoons regular unsweetened cocoa powder.

Combine all crust ingredients in a food processor until fine crumbles form. Then press the sticky crumbles firmly into a lined 8 inch or 9 inch springform pan.

  1. Brittany Audra @ Audra's Appetite says:

I’ve been all about the no-bake desserts this summer, so I can’t wait to try this! Roughly how many avocados does it take for 12 ounces?

    1. Jason Sanford says:

It depends on the size of the avocado, but usually about three! The flesh of one avocado should be roughly 110-120g (12oz is about 340g).

    2. Hannah says:

      1.5 cups!

  2. Barbara says:

Is the measurement for the avocado a weight or is it volume?
    Thank you!

    1. Jason Sanford says:

Weight, so what it would weigh on a food scale once the pit and peel are removed. It’s about 3 avocados.

  3. Passade says:

This looks so tempting and delicious. I would like to thank you for sharing such an amazing dish.

  4. Jen says:

What sweetener and chocolate chips were used to determine the nutrition facts? Curious to know what the carb load would be if using stevia (or similar) and no sugar added chocolate chips (keto version)….

    1. Jason Sanford says:

Normal chocolate chips, stevia as sweetener πŸ™‚

    Hi,
How do you think it will turn out if I use the Lily’s dark chocolate stevia sweetened chocolate chips instead of regular ones?
Thank you SO much for all of your amazing recipes!

    1. Jason Sanford says:

Those normally work just fine in recipes that call for regular chocolate chips. I don’t see why they wouldn’t work here, but be sure to report back for the rest of us if you try!

  10. Asha says:

Can I use raw cocoa powder instead of chocolate chips to make it healthier? Or will this effect how it sets ?

Sorry we have not tried so can’t say how it would taste or what the texture would be. If you experiment, be sure to report back!
