Secretly healthy avocado desserts
I know what you might be thinking.
There goes another millennial with her eye rolling basic avocado obsession, ruining dessert by putting avocado in everything.
But the concept of sweet avocado desserts is actually not a millennial invention at all.
Populations around the world have been using the superfood fruit to make Avocado Smoothies, milkshakes, pudding, fruit salad, and Avocado Ice Cream for years.
High in healthy fats (over 75% of the fat in avocado is the heart healthy unsaturated kind) and with a mild flavor, the creamy fruit is the perfect base for chocolate recipes like this rich chocolate avocado pie.
Also, just be glad I didnβt make a recipe for avocado toast chocolate bars.
Yes, such a thing is a real product you can buy at the store.
And yes, it has actual pieces of avocado toast smashed into the chocolate bar.
I canβt even.
(Although, to be fair, I am intrigued.)

How does it taste?
The first thing you all probably want to know is Does this pie taste like avocado?
Thankfully, the answer is No.
Guacamole is great and all, but I donβt want guacamole in my dessert.
If you are skeptical because youβve tried desserts in the past that combined chocolate and avocado and did have an unfortunate taste?
Trust me, Iβve been there too.
In this deliciously healthy dessert recipe, I use two different types of chocolate, giving the pie a chocolatey brownie flavor and completely masking the avocado.
This means you can enjoy all the health benefits and the silky smooth texture without ever being able to tell the secret ingredient is there.
Use up leftover avocado in this Avocado Salad Recipe

Ingredients for the recipe
Avocado β Mashed avocado makes up the base of this pie and stands in for the heavy cream or egg yolks in most traditional chocolate pie recipes.
For the best flavor and texture, be sure to start with ripe avocado.
Cocoa Powder β I highly recommend using Dutch process cocoa powder, which should be readily available in most grocery stores.
If you cannot find this ingredient, you can swap it out for regular unsweetened cocoa powder or even hot chocolate mix.
Chocolate Chips β Melted chocolate chips add richness and a smooth texture. You can use milk chocolate, semi sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate.
If you do not have chocolate chips on hand, you can substitute ten ounces of your favorite chocolate bars.
For a vegan chocolate avocado pie, go with plant based and dairy free chocolate chips. Or for a low carb and keto dessert, use sugar free chocolate chips.
Sweetener β My favorite option is pure maple syrup. Honey, agave, regular white sugar, or unrefined coconut sugar are fine as well.
To make the dessert without sugar, try xylitol or erythritol.
Salt β Throw in a pinch of salt (just a fourth teaspoon for the entire recipe) to balance the sweetness and add depth of flavor.
Vanilla β This ingredient is optional. I like the hint of vanilla it imparts on each bite.
Avocado chocolate pie crust
Feel free to use your favorite store bought or homemade crust for this chocolate pie.
Or keep it crustless, serving the chocolate filling in ramekins as chocolate mousse.
Here is the no bake pie crust recipe I used:
1 1/2 cups raw or roasted nuts of choice, 1 cup dates or another dried fruit, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons Dutch cocoa powder or 3 tablespoons regular unsweetened cocoa powder.
Combine all crust ingredients in a food processor until fine crumbles form. Then press the sticky crumbles firmly into a lined 8 inch or 9 inch springform pan.

For a chocolate pie without avocado, make this Vegan Chocolate Pie.

Healthy Desserts with Hidden Ingredients

Made this crustless for Thanksgiving, sooo good! Uses Lilyβs sugar free chocolate chips, erythritol with a splash of liquid sucralose and made it keto. My family didnβt even notice. Thank you! New fav recipe and so easy! The chips melted in like 2 minutes in the microwave. I also added a splash of whipping cream.
What sweetener is used is this recipe?
Hi, it means use your favorite! π So regular sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, honey, erythritol, or whatever you normally use to sweeten things if given a choice.
Added like double the chocolate, 1 tbs melted butter and a little sugar free cool whip mixed in. Always yummy with cool whip on top and sliced strawberries.
I did not use any chocolate chips though. Just cocoa
How much chocolate chips would make 12 oz?
Soooo good!! I used coco powder, meted sugar free chocolate squares ( Hersheyβs and Seeβs sugar-free chocolate bar) and 1 1/2 tablespoons of agave syrup to sweeten. I also chopped sugar-free coconut candy bars and sprinkled on top (because I love coconut!). Now I have a favorite recipe to avocados that we have growing!
Oh yum⦠good idea about the topping! Never even crossed my mind! Thanx for that tip!
This was so creamy and rich in flavor! I made the crust with pecans. I used 4oz of dark chocolate and 4oz of semi-sweet chocolate. For the sweetener, I used brown sugar. I was worried that the brown sugar would be gritty but I didnβt notice it at all. I used large avocados and hence 1.5 large avocados was enough for the recipe. Your recipes never disappoint. π
This says vegan, but Iβm curious about the chocolate chips. Donβt they have a milk product in them? If so did you use a vegan chocolate chip product?
There are happily a lot of vegan chocolate chip brands. Katie mentions some in her βvegan chocolate chip cookiesβ post if you want more brand names, but here is one good brand: https://amzn.to/2JAbZlh
Hello- can cacao powder be used instead of cocoa? Trying to avoid going to the store if possible! Thank you! Canβt wait to try!
Sure, but for best taste you should still use the dutch if you can β or the melted chocolate instead of dutch! For the regular cocoa powder, itβs fine to sub cacao powder.

Do you have the recipe for your pie crust shown in the photos of this pie?
Hi yes! The crust is written out in the post (right under where it says βMore Crazy Ingredient Recipesβ)
Hi, i dont have a springform pan so put this in a normal one. Will it be ok to serve ? Or can i bake this cake as it is to make it firmer? Thanks !
Urgent! How long does it take to set? I am having a timed competition with friends over a face call and I wanted to make sure I could make it in time, approx 30 min. Love the recipe by the way, Iβm super excited to try it out!
