French Toast is now portable!
Take your French Toast to work.
Take it to class, take it in the car, sneak it into your little sister’s piano recital… Just don’t blame me if people give you weird looks :-?.
Fast Food?
When I was little, Burger King French toast sticks were a rare treat. On long car trips, or if I had an early-morning soccer game, we’d sometimes pick up BK French toast sticks for breakfast. Yesterday I decided to use Ezekiel cinnamon-raisin bread and make my own French toast sticks:
French Toast to-go!
(serves 2)
Categorized here: Non-Dessert Recipes.
- 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk of choice
- 1 medium, overripe banana (see nutrition link below, for substitution ideas)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/16 tsp salt
- optional: oil or margarine for cooking
- 4-5 slices bread (or cinnamon-raisin bread)
Either blend first five ingredients, or thoroughly mash your banana with a fork and then add other ingredients (excluding bread). In a wide, shallow dish, put a slice of bread into the batter and let it sit for 30 seconds on each side. (Don’t rush this step!) Fry in a little bit of vegan butter or oil (or you can coat the pan with oil spray if you prefer), and cook on medium-low heat. You’ll probably want to do one slice at a time, so there’s room to flip when it browns. Obviously, you can just eat this as regular french toast… but it’s way more fun to cut into strips and eat with your hands!
Got any remaining batter? Pour it on top of your French toast sticks!
Top with powdered sugar or Sugar-Free Powdered Sugar.
Or dip in syrup, or spread with peanut butter!!
Question of the Day:
How often do you eat fast food?
I think I was destined to be a vegetarian… Even when I was little, I never liked fast-food burgers. My favorite things to order were the Frostys, Taco Bell cinnamon twists, and McDonalds apple pies.
Yesterday I ate my French toast with this milkshake.
Completing the fast-food makeover ;).

Yum!
I have been enjoying (non vegan) french toast for the past few days. It makes for such a tasty breakfast.
But, I think I like vegan french toast even more! I usually add some flax to the french toast batter for a tasty result.
I love the strips idea! Breakfast for lunch french toast sticks was the only lunch my elementary school served that I actually liked.
Have a wonderful day!
When I was little, I didn’t like fast food much either. The burgers were gross, the fries were too soggy, and the chicken nuggets were..ehhhh…ok…The one thing I did like was McDonald’s Cinnamon rolls….but they discontinued those anyway. I think I really only ate it twice. I can’t imagine eating it now, though! Talk about a sugar coma!
OK, this one looks totally fun. If I try it, it will be the first vegan french toast I have ever tried, and I have been vegan for over 15 years! So I am kind of excited to play with this one.
Anyway, I rarely (never) eat fast food and didn’t really grow up eating it. A couple of years ago I did a cross country drive from WA state to Virginia and definitely had to get creative with some fast food options. I think more than anything when I want to “go out” I want good food if I am going to spend the money anyway. With more deli style options available in my area you can still go more fast food without the typical option.
Have a great day! 🙂
Oh gosh, I never eat fast food anymore. The closest I get is picking up salad from a local greek place, or getting a chipotle salad bowl. I can’t remember the last time I went into a real fast food place like McDonalds!
OH. MY. WORD. Seriously, this is heaven. Who doesn’t love french toast. Katie, you’ve done it again…you’re making me hungry. Thanks for sharing this post.
Wishing you the best,
French Toast Loving Girl (me, aka Katie)
My favorites used to be mcdonalds apple pies and their shaker salads. I guess the lesser of some evils….? eh not quite haha.
I don’t eat fast food often at all. Unless you count someplace like Panera or Chipotle … we’ll probably go to a place like that a couple of times a month. 🙂
Oh, yum! It reminds me when we used to get those french toast sticks from BK. Oh, the memories!
I almost never eat fast food … unless you count Subway! When I’m having a busy work week, a stop there is almost a guarantee 🙂
Do you remember the french toast sticks that they used to serve on the airlines? I seriously have fond memories of those when I was a kid – I was so disappointed when they stopped serving them. I’m guessing these are better, but it just reminded me of them. 🙂
I grew up on fast food….taco bell!! Del taco…and yes mcdonalds….my kids who aren’t anywhere near Vegan all hate mcdonalds tho…my 5 yo has never been..everytime we pass one he says oh that’s yucky food….lol
we go to Chipotle for fast food on occasion …think that’s it these days….
This looks so good….never had ezekial raisin bread ..maybe I should try it
I used to love little french toast sticks when i was little. This recipe is sooo simple and i cant wait to try it out!
Mmmmmm 🙂
I can’t stand fast food, I love home made and fresh food..,fast food never does it for me
mmmm I love French toast! I’ve made it vegan a few times, but never thought to take it on the go. I don’t think French toast sticks are very big in Canada. Such a great idea!
It must be French toast day because this morning on Live! with Kelly, Kelly and her co-host made microwaveable “5-minute French toast” in a mug. But your recipe looks SO much better!! While I do eat eggs, I’ve never been a huge fan of French toast because it always tastes too eggy (and strangely metallic) to me. So I’m really excited to give this a try – love that there’s banana in there, and that leftover batter can be used as a topping!
Oh, sad day! I can’t do bananas 🙁 There doesn’t seem to be a good vegan alternative to them, though.
??
I listed substitutions in my post. 🙂
For some reason I am super excited to try the crushed pineapple option. I might even do a side-by-side comparison. 🙂
