Haven’t you always wanted to eat cookies for breakfast??

These sugar free cookies are filled with wholesome ingredients like bananas, oats, and raisins. See? Totally acceptable for breakfast. Or lunch.
Mmm sure, why not?

Normally, my goal is to make my healthy dessert recipes not taste healthy. However, these cookies are an exception to that rule. (In other words, don’t expect them to taste like traditional cookies you’d find in a bakery.) The wholesome breakfast cookies won’t be a hit with everyone, and I wouldn’t bring them to a party.
For that, I recommend my popular Flourless Chocolate Chip Cookies.
But if you’re used to the taste of healthy desserts—and maybe even if you’re not—these incredibly healthy oatmeal-raisin cookies might just be your newest-favorite cookies!

Oatmeal Raisin Breakfast Cookies
Also found here: 100 Sugar-Free Recipes
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- scant 1/2 cup applesauce or over-ripe banana (mashed)
- 1/4 cup nut butter of choice (I used salted peanut butter)
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp raisins (or other dried fruit, or even chocolate chips)
- 1/16 tsp salt, plus a tiny pinch more if desired (taste dough to decide)
- 1 packet stevia if using applesauce version (or 1 tablespoon sugar. I actually omitted this altogether. If you have absolutely no sweet tooth, you can try it that way. And if you have a huge sweet tooth—or are used to “non-healthy-tasting” desserts—try adding 1/4 cup sugar. As I said above, don’t expect these to taste like your everyday oatmeal-raisin cookies. I’ll post a recipe for those soon!)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mash the applesauce or banana with the nut butter, then add all other ingredients and mix until well-combined. Shape into cookies and bake for around 14 minutes. (Alternatively, you can try pulverizing the raisins and oats before combining them with the banana mixture, if you want more sweetness.) This recipe probably yields around 10-12 cookies, but I had to guess… because I ate a considerable amount of the raw dough!
Raisins: Do you love or hate them?
It seems like people have very strong feelings about raisins—either adoring them or loathing them! My roommate is on Team No-Raisins. Yesterday afternoon, as we were eating the cookies, she kept picking out the raisins and asking, “Couldn’t you have used chocolate chips instead?!” Hmmm, that’s actually not a bad idea. If there’s one thing I love more than raisins, it’s chocolate!
EDIT – Here is the chocolate version:

First of all, how did you balance them so nicely and manage to get a pic without them falling and second …they still look delicious to me!
Haha oh yes, they did want to fall! And they very much DID fall… multiple times! I ended up sticking a toothpick in! 🙂
Thanks Katie! I am doing eat to live, and I hardly had to modify the recipe to make it fit! No sweetener, no salt. They were PERFECT. I made a single serving version and put it aside to have with breakfast tomorrow (I had a nibble). I chose to use a melted banana, pb & raisins. So yummy! Thanks so much. You rock. I love your blog.
Regards – a fellow chocolate covered, breakfast loving, vegan running gal (seriously, your blog speaks to my soul).
Haha so nice to know there are two of us! 😉
Love oatmeal raisin cookies – these look delicious! And perfectly acceptable for breakfast or lunch 🙂
Yum! I will have to make these as soon as I have all of the ingredients..they sound wonderful (but probably with chocolate chips over raisins..for some reason I’m just not a fan..). They look perfect for a quick breakfast or snack on-the-go, and now that med school has started up again “quick” is a much needed quality 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!
These look delicious, but I hope you do come up with a healthier granola bar! I’ve been craving them like something fierce 🙂
I actually DID get a good granola bar recipe to turn out! Hopefully I can get the post up soon! 🙂
You’re so right–there are definite raisin lovers and raisin haters. I am a lover–I have a tendency to pick them out of raisin bran and granola…
My sister doesn’t like them though–she always requests that my mom leave them out of her holiday pumpkin bread.
Yum! DEFINITELY trying these!!
Gotta love an easy healthy cookie recipe 🙂 I made a batch tonight using applesauce and 1 tsp of sugar. My bf who loves all things really sugary and buttery loved them, I think the peanut butter won him over. Next time I’m adding dark chocolate chips too. Thank you for a great recipe!
Peanut butter always wins me over too… the only thing better than peanut butter is chocolate. Or chocolate AND peanut butter. 😉
My 13-year-old daughter and I have been addicted to your blog for the last several months. Thank you for all your healthy kitchen work! These cookies are awesome! We just made a batch for breakfast tomorrow morning, and a few have mysteriously disappeared already. We’ll be having sweet dreams tonight!
Thank YOU for trying them! It always makes me so so happy when someone tries one of my recipes!
A quick (and healthier) answer to tonight’s craving…otherwise I would have caved to the siren song of some Oreos my brother brought home…thank you Katie 🙂 I used applesauce and almond butter, plus a large pinch of salt. For sugar I used a Tbs of pure maple syrup, and used 2 Tbs raisins plus 2 Tbs mini MnM’s. After adding the half cup oats, the batter still seemed a tad wet, so I added another Tbs of oats, plus a Tbs of whole spelt flour. They baked up soft and thick and chewy, just how I like. An added bonus: under 30 min from start (getting ingredients out) to finish (taking them out of the oven). I also love your choc chip cookie dough dip, and find that it tastes even better after languishing in the fridge for 2 – 3 days 🙂
Haha those Oreos are LOUD when they want to be eaten! 😉
The recipe looks great, but would definitely be better with chocolate! Life is better with chocolate in it 🙂
I like raisins, but I’m not a die hard fan! They have a weird after-taste to me..
I don’t love raisins but the kids do. I could try a different kind of dried fruit too and I’m sure it would be delicious. I love the idea of eating cookies for breakfast and I’m sure the little ones would too! I always ate cookies and donuts and cake-type things as a kid for breakfast but they weren’t the healthy kind. So thankful for websites like this so I can do better for my kiddos!
These were great! I added pureed dates for my sweetener. I usually don’t like raisins in cookies at all, but as I’ve lowered my sugar in my sweets, I guess I’m starting to appreciate them for their sweetness.
Cookies for breakfast…yum!! My kids are going to be so excited abut this one!! Thanks for the great recipe…I am loving your blog!
cookies for breakfast sounds like a dream… (drool)
