Oatmeal Raisin Breakfast Cookies

Haven’t you always wanted to eat cookies for breakfast??

vegan oatmeal raisin cookies

These sugar free cookies are filled with wholesome ingredients like bananas, oats, and raisins. See? Totally acceptable for breakfast. Or lunch.

Mmm sure, why not?

Normally, my goal is to make my healthy dessert recipes not taste healthy. However, these cookies are an exception to that rule. (In other words, don’t expect them to taste like traditional cookies you’d find in a bakery.) The wholesome breakfast cookies won’t be a hit with everyone, and I wouldn’t bring them to a party.

For that, I recommend my popular Flourless Chocolate Chip Cookies.

But if you’re used to the taste of healthy desserts—and maybe even if you’re not—these incredibly healthy oatmeal-raisin cookies might just be your newest-favorite cookies!

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • scant 1/2 cup applesauce or over-ripe banana (mashed)
  • 1/4 cup nut butter of choice (I used salted peanut butter)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp raisins (or other dried fruit, or even chocolate chips)
  • 1/16 tsp salt, plus a tiny pinch more if desired (taste dough to decide)
  • 1 packet stevia if using applesauce version (or 1 tablespoon sugar. I actually omitted this altogether. If you have absolutely no sweet tooth, you can try it that way. And if you have a huge sweet tooth—or are used to “non-healthy-tasting” desserts—try adding 1/4 cup sugar. As I said above, don’t expect these to taste like your everyday oatmeal-raisin cookies. I’ll post a recipe for those soon!)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mash the applesauce or banana with the nut butter, then add all other ingredients and mix until well-combined. Shape into cookies and bake for around 14 minutes. (Alternatively, you can try pulverizing the raisins and oats before combining them with the banana mixture, if you want more sweetness.) This recipe probably yields around 10-12 cookies, but I had to guess… because I ate a considerable amount of the raw dough!

Raisins: Do you love or hate them?

It seems like people have very strong feelings about raisins—either adoring them or loathing them! My roommate is on Team No-Raisins. Yesterday afternoon, as we were eating the cookies, she kept picking out the raisins and asking, “Couldn’t you have used chocolate chips instead?!” Hmmm, that’s actually not a bad idea. If there’s one thing I love more than raisins, it’s chocolate!

EDIT – Here is the chocolate version:

These are in my oven right this moment, and I’m resisting the urge to pop one of the magma-like spheres into my mouth right this minute. Self control. Self control, hah.
    Thank you!

    1. Chocolate-Covered Katie says:

Any nut butter will do 🙂

      1. Ellen says:

yes but thats just it I have no nut butters lol can I omit the peanut butter without ruining the recipe?

        1. Chocolate-Covered Katie says:

          Sorry, I don’t know.

          1. Ellen says:

I suppose I could try it heh

  5. Bethany says:

I just made these and they are pretty good. Definitely not like the traditional oatmeal-raisin cookie (I’m going to try your flourless one today too!) but they make a good snack. 🙂 I also tried it with chocolate chips and those were delicious! With the choco-chip ones I only used half the peanut butter and (obviously) no raisins. Yum!

  6. Katie says:

These are my new obsession! Absolutely LOVE them! I omitted the salt and sugar and they are still amazing. Thank you for this recipe! 🙂

  7. Megan says:

These are sooo good! I tried both versions, the banana and the applesauce and I have to say I prefer the applesauce. I also tried another applesauce version with cut up date and pecans. So yummy! I plan on making many variations of these. I made two batches and they disappeared in 24 hours!

  8. Callie says:

I was craving a chocolate but I’m on a diet so decided to make these! Not a banana fan so I used unsweetened applesauce, and two tablespoons of sugar because i’m out of stevia. Instead of raisins I used mini chocolate chips (two tablespoons) and they were awesome. I think these are going to be a new staple in my house! Thanks Katie!

  9. tanya says:

I made these last night, I used applesauce instead of the banana, and they did not turn out too well. I have not used the banana yet, but I would reccomend using that instead. Not very flavorful, so I would reccomend using nuts or chocolate chips. 🙂
Also, I used about 1/4 Flour & 1/2 MORE oats because my batter was very watery.

  10. Mick says:

I just made these cookies but I added dark chocolate chips in instead of the raisins. They were delicious! Even my sister loved them, and she hates anything healthy! Thank you so much for posting this recipe =)

  11. Ferial says:

I doubled the recipe and used BOTH banana and applesauce and they turned out SO GOOD.
Great recipe as usual, Katie. 🙂

  12. Aimee says:

Much prefer these with the banana but i might make them next time as Ferial did above. They have been a huge hit in this house! Thanks Katie 🙂

  13. gv says:

I love it that they are a small recipe so I don’t have tons I have around and that you have nutritional info. I figure it all out for myself but I like it that you’ve done it for me :). I just got gf oats so this is great.

  14. Mandie says:

I just made these this morning! I used banana & chocolate chips. They were awesome!
I don’t mind the ‘healthy’ taste of these little things at all – kind of makes me feel good about eating them. No Guilt! lol

Next time I make them I’m not going to add anything to them & add extra cinnamon.

Question – Does cashew butter have a more mild flavor than pb or almond butter? Some in my family do not care for the pb taste & I thought that perhaps cashew butter was the answer; as I know that almond butter has a strong flavor.

    1. Anonymous says:

      Edit:
The other day I did make them with nothing added and upped the cinnamon.
      They were awesome!

Although it would be kind of weird to say you had cookies for breakfast if someone asked, this is definitely a great breakfast recipe!

      1. Mandie says:

Woops! The above “Anonymous” comment was me.

    2. Chocolate-Covered Katie says:

I’m really not sure. I guess it depends on one’s taste buds.

      1. Mandie says:

I tried them with cashew butter the other day & they were good! The did have a mild flavor. Though I love the pb taste, others prefer the cashew.

  15. Gabrielle @ Marathons and Macarons says:

I made these with applesauce, chopped pistachio nuts and dried apricots – they were fantastic! I also used some nutmeg. The peanut butter makes them soft and gooey, which I love in a cookie. My only regret was that I didn’t double the recipe! 🙂

  16. Kerri says:

Hi Katie! I make these breakfast cookies a lot. We love them! But today, I had leftover pumpkin in my fridge, no applesauce, and had to reserve my last banana for my baby boy. I had been waiting to try a new twist on these. I didn’t have time to check and see if anyone else already posted results for this substitute, but I know you love to read that kind of feedback. I replaced the banana with pumpkin and the raisins with two tablespoons of mini chocolate chips. They are delicious! I think I’ll put allspice and nutmeg in next time though. Thanks for all your wonderful recipes. We love so many of them!

    1. Chocolate-Covered Katie says:

I’m really glad someone tried them with pumpkin! Thanks for reporting back, Kerri. Haha I might just have to try it with the pumpkin spices now… even if it is the middle of May ;).
