If you’ve been reading this blog for a really long time, you might remember one of my most popular recipes, the Fudge Babies.
The original raw chocolate balls, fudge babies had no added sugar, no oil or heavy cream, and they tasted like pure chocolate bliss.
The recipe sparked hundreds of spin-offs from bloggers all over the world, with over 4,000 likes on facebook, and it was one of the three recipes I was asked to make during my guest appearance on USA Today.

There was only one problem with the fudge babies…
Like many other raw desserts, the base of the original raw chocolate fudge balls was raw nuts, such as walnuts or cashews.
This meant everyone allergic to nuts or who chose not to eat them couldn’t join in the fudge baby fun.
So finally, here is a chocolatey raw dessert that is 100% completely nut-free!

The pinch of salt gives these raw chocolate truffles surprising flavor depth, making up for the lack of fat in the recipe, and they’re pretty easy to whip up for a quick snack.
Note: If you’re looking for a more traditional truffle recipe instead of one with dates, here is my classic Chocolate Truffle Recipe.

Raw Chocolate Fudge Balls
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dates
- 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- small handful mini chocolate chips, optional
- optional cocoa, shredded coconut, melted chocolate, etc.
Instructions
- Combine the first three ingredients (and chips, if using) in a strong food processor or Vitamix, and blend until completely smooth. Scoop into a bowl, and freeze until the sticky dough is firm enough to roll balls (a half hour or so). Once balls are rolled—either with your hands or a mini cookie scoop—you can roll in the optional cocoa or coconut, or just eat them plain. I store leftover raw chocolate fudge balls in the freezer to keep them as firm as possible.View Nutrition Facts

These look so easy and delicious! I love dates (and chocolate, naturally).
Those look delicious Katie. Now everyone can enjoy these fudge babies.
I make these, at least, once a fortnight! This is my favorite CCK recipe.
How many balls does a batch make?
In the nutrition facts, it says that it makes 14 truffles.
Little balls of crack! 🙂 Delicious, Katie!
Oh omnomnom! These look delicious! Love your simple vegan treats Katie!
These look fabulous!
Does it matter what type of dates are used? Thanks!
What a fun thing to bring to a party! Does anyone know what the best kind of chocolate (melted) would be to use on the outside so that it solidifies?
If you just take chocolate chips or broken up pieces of your favorite chocolate bar (such as Endangered Species, Pacari, Lindt, etc) you can just melt that and dip the balls in. Then freeze until hard.
I’m experimenting with tempering chocolate, otherwise it will always melt on your fingers, and using that to coat such treats. You can user special wafers, but they have stabilizers in them and aren’t the best. Of course, it depends on how natural you are trying to eat. At any rate, dates and chocolate… what could be better.
Do you have any tips for making these in a Vitamix? I have one and sometimes have a hard time blending solids like dates without any liquid. I’ll usually use a food processor instead, but I’d prefer to use my Vitamix!
I doubled the recipe and used 4 tbsp and 1 tsp raw agave nectar, so I guess that would be 2 tbsp and 1/2 tsp for the original. That adds enough moisture for my blender if I keep stirring and scraping down the sides, but it does make the fudge sweeter (which I have no problem with! ?)
I keep seeing Raw recipes for desserts, but I haven’t been brave enough to try them…these actually sound do-able and something my family would enjoy. Thanks for posting!
Sounds delish! What do you think of adding protein powder for additional protein? I love the idea of protein balls but don’t like the taste of nuts or nut butter.
