If you’ve been reading this blog for a really long time, you might remember one of my most popular recipes, the Fudge Babies.
The original raw chocolate balls, fudge babies had no added sugar, no oil or heavy cream, and they tasted like pure chocolate bliss.
The recipe sparked hundreds of spin-offs from bloggers all over the world, with over 4,000 likes on facebook, and it was one of the three recipes I was asked to make during my guest appearance on USA Today.

There was only one problem with the fudge babies…
Like many other raw desserts, the base of the original raw chocolate fudge balls was raw nuts, such as walnuts or cashews.
This meant everyone allergic to nuts or who chose not to eat them couldn’t join in the fudge baby fun.
So finally, here is a chocolatey raw dessert that is 100% completely nut-free!

The pinch of salt gives these raw chocolate truffles surprising flavor depth, making up for the lack of fat in the recipe, and they’re pretty easy to whip up for a quick snack.
Note: If you’re looking for a more traditional truffle recipe instead of one with dates, here is my classic Chocolate Truffle Recipe.

Raw Chocolate Fudge Balls
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dates
- 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- small handful mini chocolate chips, optional
- optional cocoa, shredded coconut, melted chocolate, etc.
Instructions
- Combine the first three ingredients (and chips, if using) in a strong food processor or Vitamix, and blend until completely smooth. Scoop into a bowl, and freeze until the sticky dough is firm enough to roll balls (a half hour or so). Once balls are rolled—either with your hands or a mini cookie scoop—you can roll in the optional cocoa or coconut, or just eat them plain. I store leftover raw chocolate fudge balls in the freezer to keep them as firm as possible.View Nutrition Facts

These were a nightmare to make (SOOO sticky and difficult to blend) but oh my god, really worth the trouble. Absolutely delicious. Lucky for me, I wasn’t home alone when I made them, otherwise I would have eaten the whole batch! 😀
Hi, I find if I use gloves sprayed very lightly with Pam it’s so much easier to roll the balls
I’m very excited about trying the sweet potato burgers today. I also love vegetarian Indian dishes
I have looked everywhere for dates that are not made in a factory with nuts and seeds. I have given up hope ever to find safe dates or figs.
They not only look but they taste great also (cocco ones) 🙂
Yay! Always happy to see your Paleo friendly recipes, thanks. :0)
These look so yum! However, when it says “1 tbsp plus 2 tsp cacao or cocoa powder” How much cocoa powder do I actually put in? Is it 1tbsp or 2tsp? Just a little confused. Otherwise, thanks for sharing your recipe! 🙂
1 tbsp cocoa PLUS 2 tsp cocoa. So both.
How are all your recipes healthy with all the chocolate?
Wow! I am pleasantly surprised at how good these are!! They are SO fast to make & are really, really delicious! I think this may be a new regular around here!! Thank you for sharing recipes that are truly healthy & truly delicious!!! 😀
These looked so good, but alas, both my food processor and my Vitamix motors burned up trying to process the dates. 🙁
This recipe may have made a Blendtec fan out of me.
Try using SunMaid dates. They are much softer and are easy to process in a good food processor like a Cuisinart. (Make sure you get pitted dates as well.)
Hello Katie,
Such a wonderful recipe and it`s so easy to prepare! Thak you very much! The SunMaid dates are perfect. My son has a Birthday yesterday and his friends eat the chocolate balls for a minutes! It was so delicious for the kids!
