If you’ve been reading this blog for a really long time, you might remember one of my most popular recipes, the Fudge Babies.
The original raw chocolate balls, fudge babies had no added sugar, no oil or heavy cream, and they tasted like pure chocolate bliss.
The recipe sparked hundreds of spin-offs from bloggers all over the world, with over 4,000 likes on facebook, and it was one of the three recipes I was asked to make during my guest appearance on USA Today.

There was only one problem with the fudge babies…
Like many other raw desserts, the base of the original raw chocolate fudge balls was raw nuts, such as walnuts or cashews.
This meant everyone allergic to nuts or who chose not to eat them couldn’t join in the fudge baby fun.
So finally, here is a chocolatey raw dessert that is 100% completely nut-free!

The pinch of salt gives these raw chocolate truffles surprising flavor depth, making up for the lack of fat in the recipe, and they’re pretty easy to whip up for a quick snack.
Note: If you’re looking for a more traditional truffle recipe instead of one with dates, here is my classic Chocolate Truffle Recipe.

Raw Chocolate Fudge Balls
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups pitted dates
- 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- small handful mini chocolate chips, optional
- optional cocoa, shredded coconut, melted chocolate, etc.
Instructions
- Combine the first three ingredients (and chips, if using) in a strong food processor or Vitamix, and blend until completely smooth. Scoop into a bowl, and freeze until the sticky dough is firm enough to roll balls (a half hour or so). Once balls are rolled—either with your hands or a mini cookie scoop—you can roll in the optional cocoa or coconut, or just eat them plain. I store leftover raw chocolate fudge balls in the freezer to keep them as firm as possible.View Nutrition Facts

wow these look uber yummy!!
Thanks a lot for this delicious recipe. I am a big fan of dates recipes. Even date’s cake..
I have made these several times and everyone loves them. My office friends really enjoy them when I bring them in.
I do! https://lett-trim.today/2013/10/11/chocolate-dipped-mocha-coconut-cookies/%3C/a%3E 🙂
I would recommend just making the recipes that don’t use dates, as when they’re included they make up the bulk substance of a recipe so can’t really be omitted.
I recently started eating sugar free and the food I miss most is, of course, chocolate; I desperately, quickly found this recipe and had to try it out. The first 3 ingredients had some trouble coming together- I assumed because my dates had been in the refrigerator- just a little bit of coconut oil did the trick. I also added some vanilla extract along with the salt to bring out the chocolate. After freezing, rolling, and dusting them with coco, they were delicious. You know, I think I might be able to get through eating sugar free if I have these 😉
Just made these, super easy and 3 ingredients-dates, cocoa and choc chips, def satisfied my sweet tooth on my nye cleaneating diet, with no carbs for dinner!
These were amazing! So easy to make and so delicious! Thank you for the wonderful recipe Katie. We rolled them in sprinkles and coconut for a Valentine’s treat. They stayed good in the fridge and even held their shape when they were stored on the counter.
I made these tonight for Valentine’s day and subbed half of the dates for dried blueberries, a few chocolate chips, and just a dash of vanilla. Oh my gosh, they are addicting! Thanks for the idea.
These look most delicious and awesome! I can not wait to make these! I’m so excited!!!!!
haven’t tried any recipes as yet, but they look absolutely yummy!
