Ingredients for chocolate peanut butter cups in an ice cube tray

Peanut butter – This can be either smooth or crunchy peanut butter. And natural pb works just as well as brands like Skippy or Jif.

If you are allergic to peanuts or simply want a different flavor, try almond butter, sunflower seed butter, cashew butter, or even Coconut Butter.

Chocolate – I like semi sweet or dark chocolate chips. You can use milk chocolate or white chocolate if you prefer. Or go with broken up chocolate bars in the flavor of your choice.

To make plant based vegan pb cups, look for dairy free chocolate chips. For those on a low carb or keto diet, use Sugar Free Chocolate Chips.

Sweetener – Especially if you like the taste of sweeter peanut butter cups and are using peanut butter with no sugar, you can stir in your favorite sweetener to taste. Options include pure maple syrup or honey, powdered sugar, erythritol, or stevia.

Other optional ingredients – I have found that stirring two teaspoons of vegetable oil or coconut oil into the melted chocolate gives you a smoother sauce. This is completely optional. You can also add a drop or two of pure peppermint extract, maple extract, or vanilla extract to the peanut butter or melted chocolate if you wish.

How to make ice cube tray peanut butter cups

The simple no bake chocolate recipe takes just a few steps.

Step One:

Carefully melt your chocolate chips in the microwave or on the stove top by using the double boiler method. Once melted, stir in an optional two teaspoons of oil if a smoother chocolate sauce is desired.

Pour the melted chocolate into the bottom of one or two clean ice cube trays. For easiest removal later, I like silicone ice cube trays.

Step Two:

Mix the nut butter and optional sweetener.

Portion this peanut butter mixture evenly into each ice cube tray, over the layer of chocolate.

Once set, these chocolate ice cube tray peanut butter cups can be stored in either the refrigerator or freezer.

Or you can leave them out in a cool, dry place for at least a few hours, and they are easy to transport to parties or events.

Genious idea! I have never think about it before. Luckily, I have some penut butter in the kitchen, so I will have some (but really a lot) these little treats soon.

  2. Rachel says:

Great idea with the chocolate covered peanut butter cups. Only question is, when I melted the chocolate chips they became to hard fast before I could even get it into the ice cubes tray. What suggestions would you make? I made them and waiting till i try some. Many yums!!

    1. Chocolate Covered Katie says:

You can re-warm it by putting it in a cold oven and turning the oven on for just a minute or two. Or microwave a few seconds. 🙂

  8. Safina says:

Can these be made without chocolate chips? Like could I do a mixture of cocoa powder, coconut oil, and maple syrup in place of them? If so, what measurements of those ingredients should I do? Thanks, Safina.

This is such a fun recipe! I just made this with my 2 year old. It was messy (everything is messy with a toddler-helper). But so worth the mess

Delicious and easy. Only problem is they are so good I want to eat them all. That’s a good problem to have!

  11. dawn says:

Why in the world would you need maple syrup…pure sugar…in something already very sweet with the chocolate?

  12. Troy S says:

Agreed. I made some from a different recipe and in cup cake tin yet I think we can all agree the combo of peanut butter and chocolate is AMAZING!

What a great idea ! And we can make infinite variations… I just tried a fruit flavored version with almond and berries…
Coating : chocolate, a litte cocoonut oil and red raspberry organic aroma
Filling : almond butter, coconut oil + a frozen berrie
They are still in the frige and I’m eager to eat them ! I will try your recipe when I buy some peanut butter (husband just finished it yesterday !). Please excuse my poor english, I’m french 😉

  14. Kristin Wayment says:

I LOVE mint and chocolate together, so instead of the peanut butter filling, I mixed honey and a few drops of peppermint oil and layered it inside the chocolate. I’ve also made a coconut almond filling by mixing a few slivered almonds to my coconut butter in the processor.
