For the past few days, one of my friends has been staying with me while she waits to move into a new apartment, so basically, it’s been an ongoing slumber party.
We’ve had movie nights, spa nights, and every night is chocolate night.

On the menu last night: Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Yet both of us woke up craving chocolate again this morning, and the only way to remedy this was to make a chocolate pancake feast.

Brownie Batter Pancakes
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup spelt, white, or oat flour (for flourless, try these Keto Pancakes)
- 1 tbsp dutch cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp sweetener of choice
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/16 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tbsp oil, or applesauce or mashed banana for fat free
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 4 – 5 tbsp milk of choice
Instructions
- Stir dry ingredients well, then add wet. Add more milk of choice as needed to form a batter consistency. Grease a nonstick pan well and heat on medium. When skillet is hot (add a drop of water to test – the pan is ready if it sizzles), drop small ladles of the batter. Use a spatula to flip when edges begin to look dry. Re-grease the pan after each set of pancakes.*I personally much prefer the oil version but some readers really like the fat-free one so I'm including that too. I haven't tried subbing regular cocoa powder for the dutch, so be sure to report back if you experiment with that. View Nutrition Facts

I just made these for breakfast. Delicious, but not very sweet by themselves!
I fixed this by layering them with peanut butter and topping them
with pure maple syrup and some healthy cookie dough bites I’d made.. delicious and super indulgent!!
Um. The chocolate on chocolate on CHOCOLATE is getting me a bit to excited, I think! It literally makes my mouth water. Looks amazing, excited to be signed up for your free recipes as of today ; ) Happy baking Katie, you’re awesome!
I made these for breakfast this morning but changed up the recipe just a little. I used chocolate protein powder instead of coco and I used oats ground up in to flour instead of my regular GF flour. I wanted it to be a good post work out breakfast. I also used 1 Tbsp of applesauce and 1/2 tbsp of coconut oil. I put it all in my nutribullet to mix it and turn the oats in to flour. They turned out awesome and I topped them with strawberries! Thanks for yet another amazing recipe! 🙂
I made these with 2 tbsp chocolate PB2 + 2 tbsp of peanut/almond butter….
*homer simpson* mmmmm…..pancakes
Katie – these were the yummiest!
I used all natural cocao (because I didn’t have Hershey’s, and well, I wasn’t about to wait) i did find they weren’t as sweet so I added a handful of chocolate chips. By the time I finished making my second pancake, the first one had already been eaten! A certain little boy ate it right up, lol! My younger bother and I have dairy and oat allergies, so these were perfect 🙂
This recipe into the waffle iron is perfection!
Just tried these and they were sinfully delicious! I didn’t have any applesauce so I used greek yogurt instead and 1 tsp of canola oil. The batter was a little thin so I think next time I’ll increase the flour to 1/3 cup and maybe only use 5 Tbs of milk. I ate mine with some melted peanut butter and it was heavenly! Thank you so much for this recipe!!!
I love your website and this recipe is really good, but I needed to make a few changes to make it work for me. You’re right that it works best with both applesauce and oil, so I used 1 T applesauce and 1/2 T oil. But I also found that the milk is too much. I had to reduce it to 2 Tbs in order to get thicker pancakes as well as adding 1 egg white. I also added 1/8 tsp instant coffee to made the chocolate richer. And one last thing: I am gluten intolerant and I’ve found I prefer oat flour so I used oat flour and they came out great!
Those pancakes are awesome, Katie! I actually love adding some mashed banana and swapping the cocoa for actual chocolate chips, for banana-choc-pancakes. The make an amazing breakfast, when straight out of the oven and served with strawberries, cinnamon, more banana, vanilla-joghurt, cinnamon, ….maybe some cinnamon? (I’m seriously addicted to cinnamon… =3 )
Anyway, thank you so much for those amazing pancakes, they make the best breakfast, snack, dessert (I could eat them any time, or all day long)
