Ingredients for chocolate peanut butter cups in an ice cube tray
Peanut butter – This can be either smooth or crunchy peanut butter. And natural pb works just as well as brands like Skippy or Jif.
If you are allergic to peanuts or simply want a different flavor, try almond butter, sunflower seed butter, cashew butter, or even Coconut Butter.
Chocolate – I like semi sweet or dark chocolate chips. You can use milk chocolate or white chocolate if you prefer. Or go with broken up chocolate bars in the flavor of your choice.
To make plant based vegan pb cups, look for dairy free chocolate chips. For those on a low carb or keto diet, use Sugar Free Chocolate Chips.
Sweetener – Especially if you like the taste of sweeter peanut butter cups and are using peanut butter with no sugar, you can stir in your favorite sweetener to taste. Options include pure maple syrup or honey, powdered sugar, erythritol, or stevia.
Other optional ingredients – I have found that stirring two teaspoons of vegetable oil or coconut oil into the melted chocolate gives you a smoother sauce. This is completely optional. You can also add a drop or two of pure peppermint extract, maple extract, or vanilla extract to the peanut butter or melted chocolate if you wish.

How to make ice cube tray peanut butter cups
The simple no bake chocolate recipe takes just a few steps.
Step One:
Carefully melt your chocolate chips in the microwave or on the stove top by using the double boiler method. Once melted, stir in an optional two teaspoons of oil if a smoother chocolate sauce is desired.
Pour the melted chocolate into the bottom of one or two clean ice cube trays. For easiest removal later, I like silicone ice cube trays.

Step Two:
Mix the nut butter and optional sweetener.
Portion this peanut butter mixture evenly into each ice cube tray, over the layer of chocolate.

Step Three:
Use a spoon to cover the peanut butter completely with remaining chocolate.
Refrigerate or freeze to fully set the ice cube tray chocolates.

Step Four:
Once set, these chocolate ice cube tray peanut butter cups can be stored in either the refrigerator or freezer.
Or you can leave them out in a cool, dry place for at least a few hours, and they are easy to transport to parties or events.
But this is only if you are willing to share!

The recipe was adapted from my Chocolate Truffles and these Peanut Butter Truffles.

Ice Cube Tray Peanut Butter Cups
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
- 1/3 cup peanut butter or nut or seed butter of choice
- 2 tsp sweetener of choice (optional)
- 2 tsp coconut oil (optional for a smoother sauce)
InstructionsÂ
- Gather your supplies. Grease an ice cube tray, and set aside. Carefully melt your chocolate. Pour about a third of the melted chocolate into the bottom of an ice cube tray. Mix together the nut butter and sweetener, if using. Divide the nut butter evenly among the ice cube molds, placing it in the middle of each. Cover with remaining chocolate. Freeze fully to set the chocolate. Go around the sides, and pop out. These can be stored in the fridge or freezer, or they can stay out at room temperature for a few hours. Genious idea! I have never think about it before. Luckily, I have some penut butter in the kitchen, so I will have some (but really a lot) these little treats soon.
These look wonderful! I assume you mixed the maple syrup and nut butter before putting that in the trays?
Ooh yes! Fixing now! Thank you!
Why have I never thought to make these in an ice cube tray?!? And I make them all the time! Next time I will…and of course, I’ll give you credit 😉

I don’t see why not! 🙂
You’re a genius!! Oh my gosh, can’t wait to make these and then have them in my freezer for when I am overcome by the need for chocolate. Brilliant! Pinned!
Great idea with the chocolate covered peanut butter cups. Only question is, when I melted the chocolate chips they became to hard fast before I could even get it into the ice cubes tray. What suggestions would you make? I made them and waiting till i try some. Many yums!!
You can re-warm it by putting it in a cold oven and turning the oven on for just a minute or two. Or microwave a few seconds. 🙂
OH MY GOSH, KATIE! I did almost the same thing a few months back (making pb cups into ice cube trays). Great minds truly do think alike 😉
Here’s the link. Not as pretty as yours but just as tasty!

These look so delicious! Can’t wait to try.
One recipe I would love to see on this blog is a healthy flan recipe! I would be so happy if there was
I can definitely put it on my list of things to try!
What a great and simple idea! I think I’ll definitely have to give these a go 🙂
Can these be made without chocolate chips? Like could I do a mixture of cocoa powder, coconut oil, and maple syrup in place of them? If so, what measurements of those ingredients should I do? Thanks, Safina.
Maybe use the healthy chocolate sauce here? https://lett-trim.today/2010/05/20/homemade-artisana-cacao-bliss/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
Hi Katie,
I forgot to grease the tray. How to take them out?? Pl help
This is such a fun recipe! I just made this with my 2 year old. It was messy (everything is messy with a toddler-helper). But so worth the mess
Delicious and easy. Only problem is they are so good I want to eat them all. That’s a good problem to have!
Why in the world would you need maple syrup…pure sugar…in something already very sweet with the chocolate?
Agreed. I made some from a different recipe and in cup cake tin yet I think we can all agree the combo of peanut butter and chocolate is AMAZING!
What a great idea ! And we can make infinite variations… I just tried a fruit flavored version with almond and berries…
Coating : chocolate, a litte cocoonut oil and red raspberry organic aroma
Filling : almond butter, coconut oil + a frozen berrie
They are still in the frige and I’m eager to eat them ! I will try your recipe when I buy some peanut butter (husband just finished it yesterday !). Please excuse my poor english, I’m french 😉
I LOVE mint and chocolate together, so instead of the peanut butter filling, I mixed honey and a few drops of peppermint oil and layered it inside the chocolate. I’ve also made a coconut almond filling by mixing a few slivered almonds to my coconut butter in the processor.
